Focus Group Transcription Services

We provide focus group transcription services from video files as well as normal audio formats. In fact, we highly recommend that you shoot focus groups on video if at all possible, provided that care is taken to also properly record the audio. This will greatly increase the quality of the transcript.

With a video source, the transcriber can see who is speaking and correctly identify them in the transcript. This is not always possible with audio-only sources because voices often sound very similar.

If shooting video, please use separate microphones from the camera and place them on or near the table. In general, on-camera microphones do a poor job of recording audio.

While we will attempt to track the various speakers voices, this is not guaranteed. The more participants on a recording, the less likely uniquely identifying each speaker will be. Tracking is also related to the uniqueness of their voices. When we can not uniquely identify a speaker we will identify them by their presumed gender. For best tracking, please provide video of your focus group sessions.

Notes on Audio for Focus Groups:

  • Proper recording technique for focus groups makes a huge difference in transcription quality. Place the recorder/microphone in the middle of the table of your participants.
  • We highly recommend recording your focus group using both audio and video.
  • If you have a large focus group (more than 8 people) you should consider using at least two separate microphones and recording in Stereo. Place each microphone at opposite ends of the table and record one to the LEFT channel and one to the RIGHT channel.
  • DO NOT USE microcassette!! The resulting transcript will most likely be extremely poor. Often times, we can only transcribe microcassette focus groups on a 'best efforts' basis. ($0.50 per minute of audio additional fee)
